Dual Head

Dual Head Series Dramatically Increases PnP Throughput

The Dual-Head Series is a five axis, servo-driven, pick and place (PnP) head that is targeted at engineers looking to upgrade equipment from pneumatic to programmable high-speed servo actuators. The twin head structure allows a double pick action when mounted on high-speed sled for increased throughput.

Throughput of a Dual Head system in a typical PnP operation could be more than doubled as a combined result of simultaneous picks, high grantry accelerations, and very high speed z-axis motion (under 100 msec for a 0.9” stroke).

The Dual Head is servo-driven design that allows gantry accelerations to 6 G's. Its compact size allows two pick and place modules that are positioned from 0.400 to 3.00-inch centers. Key to the compact size and close center-to-center distance are Brushless API servomotors coupled to mini servo drives. These components provide smooth motion for pick and place, rotate, and pitch translation functions. Closed loop servos with encoders provide 0.004 inch linear resolution with a theta of 2,048 lines including quadrature.

Each 700-gram module can independently perform Z and theta (rotate) motions with individual vacuum/blow-off lines that are internally ported through a center bore that eliminates exposed air lines. Numerous linear and radial ball bearings plus custom designed helical drives provide precision performance over extended time periods.

Options for the Dual Head models include extended pitch axis travel (beyond 3 inches), single heads, ganged heads, quad matrix configurations (10 axis typical in a 2x2 programmable X, Y matrix) and linear actuators.

Applications for the flexible Dual-Head Series include high performance linear actuators, medical analysis pipetting systems, biopsy devices, aerospace actuators, fluid dispensers, and robotic end effectors.
